Kira Nerys/Dukat is the non-canonical het pairing of the former Bajoran resistance fighter and military officer Kira Nerys and the Cardassian military officer Dukat in the television series Star Trek: Deep Space 9.
Fandom
Since Kira and Dukat were on opposing sides during the Cardassian occupation of Bajor, hatesex ia a common trope in this ship.
The Kira/Dukat pairing appears to have gone through a significant drop in popularity after the series finished airing. The post-series wave of the DS9 fandom tends to post works to AO3, where Kira/Dukat has only 66 works, some of which are backdated to the early 2000s.[1]
Fan Interpretations
Like all ships, Kira/Dukat is open to numerous interpretations (including PWP) from fans. However, the political gulf and personal complications between the two characters lends itself well to stories and interpretations with complicated dynamics. In Julia Houston's 1999 essay series, Subtext and Slash: Having Your Cake and Eating it Too, she describes Kira/Dukat stories as fulfilling a similar "fanfic as therapy" function as slash fanfic, with themes of redemption and complex sexual desires.[2]
