Luke Cage is a Netflix television series based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. It is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and follows two prior Netflix MCU series, Daredevil and Jessica Jones. It will be followed by Iron Fist and the crossover series The Defenders.

Canon

A hoodie-wearing, unbreakable ex-con fights to clear his name and save his neighborhood. He wasn't looking for a fight, but the people need a hero.[1]

Principal Characters

  • Luke Cage (Mike Colter) — An escaped wrongly-convicted convict with superhuman strength and unbreakable skin. After the events in Jessica Jones, Luke returns to Harlem and begins to use his powers to fight crime.
  • Cornell "Cottonmouth" Stokes (Mahershala Ali) — A nightclub owner and arms dealer.
  • Misty Knight (Simone Missick) — An NYPD detective investigating Cottonmouth.
  • Hernan "Shades" Alvarez (Theo Rossi) — A criminal who works for Diamondback and alongside Cottonmouth and Mariah Dillard. He and Luke Cage were in prison together.
  • Willis Stryker / Diamondback (Erik LaRay Harvey) — Head of a powerful criminal organization. He was Luke Cage's childhood friend, and is later revealed to be Luke's half-brother.
  • Claire Temple (Rosario Dawson) — A nurse with a history of getting entangled with superheroes. Claire first appeared in Daredevil and first met Luke and helped save his life in Jessica Jones.
  • Mariah Dillard (Alfre Woodard) — An ambitious local politician and cousin of Cottonmouth.

As of early 2017, the most popular pairing on AO3 was Mariah Dillard/Shades, but this has been overtaken by the popular canon het pairing of Luke Cage/Claire Temple as of early 2018. Although the Luke/Claire dynamic is popular with fans, some supporters fear the pairing is doomed in the face of a possible Luke Cage/Jessica Jones endgame.[2]

Other pairings include the femslash pairing of Misty Knight/Claire Temple.

Crossover pairings are also popular, and these pairings often include characters from the other Netflix Marvel show. For example, the slash pairing of Luke Cage/Danny Rand is popular in this fandom.
