Mutant X is a science fiction television series created by Marvel Studios. It lasted for three seasons before being canceled. The series, despite it's name, shared nothing in common with another Marvel comic title "Mutant X" which featured Alex Summers (Havok) as the main character.

Canon

The series centers on Mutant X, a team of "New Mutants" who possess extraordinary powers as a result of genetic engineering. The members of Mutant X were used as test subjects in a series of covert government experiments. The mission of Mutant X is to seek out and protect their fellow New Mutants.

Main Characters

Types of New Mutants

  • Ferals, their DNA was spliced with that of an animal (similar to a wereanimal where they have similar abilities of their animal)
  • Elementals, have the ability to channel and project various energies through their bodies; such as electricity
  • Moleculars, have attributes which defy physical science; such as becoming invisible
  • Psionics, have abilities with are associated with heightened mental capabilities; such as telepaths, telekinetics and telempaths.

Lawsuits

In 2001, 20th Century Fox sued Marvel, Tribune Entertainment, and Fireworks Entertainment for breach of their licensing agreement and false advertisement. Fox stated it had exclusive rights from Marvel to develop the X-Men property, and anything similar was an infringement. Fox claimed that Mutant X was too similar to X-Men, and Mutant X was being advertised as an "X-Men replacement." Marvel counter-sued Fox, saying that the two were dissimilar and asking the courts to allow Mutant X production to go forward. Production was allowed, as long as X-Men material was not used in the promotion of Mutant X.

This ended up changing series directions and several plotlines, such as Adam's last name. (For more information check out the Wikipedia page and here at Child of Genomex community)

Fandom

Mutant X was a very small fandom, despite the amount of websites available since most of them quickly became defunct or static. Many disappeared completely when GeoCities shut down in 2009 and other free hosting sites such as FreeWebs.com stopped hosting fansites. Despite that that a few fansites/websites have survived, although mainly remain static. The fandom seems to exist mainly on FanFiction.Net now with some branching out at Archive of Our Own.

Many fans agree that the last two seasons were very disappointing compared to the first season,[1] probably due to the lawsuits and any ties or allusions to the X-Men having to be removed from the series.
