L. Ron Hubbard was a 20th century author of pulp and science fiction. He was often published in magazines like Argosy, Astounding Science Fiction and Unknown, and was considered a decent author by science fiction fans. He is now better known as the creator of Scientology.

In a poll run by Art Widner from 1940-1941, Hubbard placed 15 out of 30 pro science fiction authors. The 2000 movie adaptation of his 1982 novel Battlefield Earth is generally accepted as one of the worst films of all time, but the book itself was well-reviewed upon release by names like Frederik Pohl and Neil Gaiman.
