Castle was an ABC American television series starring Nathan Fillion as Richard Castle, a famous mystery novelist that comes to shadow NYPD detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) in order to write a series of novels about her. For "research", Castle assists on Beckett's cases. The show ran from 2009 until 2016.

ABC and the producers made a point of establishing Richard Castle as a genuine mystery/thriller author by giving him a Twitter account (@WriteRCastle) and publishing a series of novels (ten starring "Nikki Heat", Kate Beckett's fictional counterpart, six resurrecting Castle's prior series character Derrick Storm, plus four graphic novels "adapting" earlier Storm novels mentioned onscreen) over the Castle byline. In contrast with the extensive run of Murder She Wrote novels starring and co-credited to Jessica Fletcher. the Castle books appeared during the original run of the parent TV series, sometimes being directly mentioned in aired episodes. Several of the Nikki Heat novels appeared on the New York Times bestseller lists.

Fandom Activities

  • There are a lot of Firefly references in the show, with several connecting stars and references.[1][2]

Fanfic

Themes

Fans were initially attracted to the series by the high-intensity UST shown in the relationship between Castle and Kate Beckett (aka Castle/Beckett, but as the series evolved, significant groups of fans grew dissatisfied with the show's handling of that relationship even after the UST was ultimately resolved. Other points of contention between fandom and aired canon involved extremely drawn-out story arcs arising from the pre-series murder of Kate's mother, Johanna Beckett, and Beckett's efforts to solve the case. As a result, an unusually high proportion of Castle fic is to some degree AU (specifically, canon divergence) and/or fixit in nature.

Characters & Pairings

Castle/Beckett is the fandom's most popular pairing, with most stories devoted to exploring and/or resolving the high-intensity UST shown between Castle and Beckett during the series' first few seasons. The slash pairing of Beckett's fellow detectives Javier Esposito and Kevin Ryan, Ryan/Esposito is also popular, although some stories focus on the semi-canonical pairing of Esposito with medical examiner Lanie Parish.

Castle's mother and daughter - Alexis Castle and Martha Rodgers respectively - also feature in a small proportion of Castle fic, though relatively little of that fic is pairing-centric.
