Relic Hunter was a Canadian mystery fantasy action/adventure television series, inspired by the Tomb Raider (1996) video game.[1]

Canon

The series focuses on Sydney Fox, a professor who is also a globe-trotting "relic hunter" who looks for ancient artifacts to return to museums and/or the descendants of the original owner. She is aided by her linguistic assistant Nigel and occasionally by her secretary Claudia. Sydney often ends up battling rival hunters seeking out artifacts for monetary gain. Usually includes fantasy and science fiction elements, with many of the relics featured having supposed supernatural powers or being pieces of unusually advanced technology.[1]

Main Characters

  • Tia Carrere as Sydney Fox: Sydney is a Professor of Ancient Studies, and on the rare occasions she actually teaches, has been seen lecturing on anthropology, archaeology, and history.
  • Christien Anholt as Nigel Bailey : Sydney's more reserved British teaching assistant and companion who accompanies her on her travels whilst searching for the relics.
  • Lindy Booth as Claudia (Seasons 1–2): Sydney's office assistant who often helps out Sydney and Nigel from the campus back home whilst they are abroad.
  • Tanja Reichert as Karen Petrushky (Season 3): Claudia's replacement for the final season.

Fandom

The RH fandom appears to be small but quite loyal, with almost always the same fans concentrating mostly on their own sites or on the LiveJournal and more recently in Tumblr. Most fanfics involve the main characters, Sydney and Nigel varying between genres gen or het, being followed by other pairings to a lesser extent. The most common shipping is Nigel Bailey/Sydney Fox (Syd'n'Nigel, SidNige or Sydgel), Nigel Bailey/Claudia (Claud'n'Nigel) and Nigel Bailey/Karen Petrusky (Karen'n'Nigel).

As of March 2022, there were a total of 197 works on FFN against 56 on AO3, with 3 crossovers on the first site and 13 on the second.

Because it is lightly based on the 1996 video game Tomb Raider, and having as its main character an professor and archaeologist, the most common tropes in fanworks usually address – as in the series – the search for some real or fictional relic. There are also references in some cases to Indiana Jones due to Sydney's research field.[1]
