The Sports Anime Shipping Olympics (SASO) was a summer prompt-based shipping challenge for all sports anime and manga fandoms![1] The event combined features of multiple challenges such as fests, games, and theme challenges. It was heavily inspired by the 2014 event, Homestuck Shipping World Cup.

Overview

SASO occured annually for about three months each summer. Participants were split into teams of 4-8 people and competed for points in a series of collaborative Main Rounds and kink meme-like Bonus Rounds. An additional team, named "Team Grandstand" was a non-competitive option for people who only wanted to participate in the bonus rounds. It had no limit on the number of members.

Main Rounds

Each year, SASO had two themed Main Rounds in which teams would collaborate to produce a single work that would then be voted on by other participants. Teams had one month to complete their entry, and it had to abide by a series of rules including work minimums and maximums.

Although fanfiction, fanart, and combinations of the two were the most popular type of entry, Main Round entries could consist of any type of fanwork! Past entries have included games, fanvids, and even cosplay!

Bonus Rounds

The event kicked off each year with Bonus Round 0, a one-week long graphics round. During this round, participants could earn points by creating banners and icons for qualified teams, including Team Grandstand. Five to seven Bonus Rounds followed br0. These lasted two weeks each and overlapped with the Main Rounds, forcing teams to be strategic about what they worked on. This included themed kink meme rounds, a remix round, a rec round, and an encore round.

During the remix round, participants could create fanworks based on other works created for the event (with permission). During the rec round participants earned points by recommending works created by other participants during the event. At the end of the event, an Encore Round was held, which functioned more like a typical kink meme where participants could prompt with no limitations.

As of February 14, 2019, all of SASO's bonus rounds are still open to new fills.

Conclusion of SASO

[...W]e realized a couple of things: first, we are exhausted, and second, the trust between us (the mods) and you (the participants) is now irreparably broken, and that is our fault. For these reasons, we will not be running SASO next year.[11]

Following SASO's end, a new version of the event, Sports Festival, or SportsFest, was founded.
