Disputed Categorization

The criteria for pages to be categorized as Fandom Wars is currently a bit nebulous. A page that is not mainly about a disagreement may be categorized in Fandom Wars if the controversy around it is a significant part of its relevance in fandom. So far I've only added the category to broad pages about ships, communities, events, etc. if is seems like there's enough info about the controversy for its own page. If a new page like "[Page Name] Controversy" is created, then the category with be added to the new page and removed from the main page. Please discuss and questions/objections/suggestions. – caes (talk) 00:35, 4 March 2019 (UTC)

Shipwars

I have noticed that you have been categorizing the shipwars also as fandomwars, but if shipwars are a subcategory of fandomwars, which, I totally agree with, why do the shipwar pages need both a shipwar category and a fandomwars category if all shipwars are subcategory of fandomwars? Or are you planning on getting rid of the shipwars category? I am just a little confused. -- Kingstoken (talk) 00:39, 4 March 2019 (UTC)

The shipwars category is staying. I figured that you should be able to look in the Fandom Wars category and be able to tell which fandoms have a lot of controversy by seeing all the pages, and see stuff like when one character's controversy branches off to ship wars. – caes (talk) 01:09, 4 March 2019 (UTC)
I'd like to propose that we make a change with this category. I think it should apply only to pages that are specifically about a conflict. Or instance One Direction Fandom Wars and The Beauty and the Beast Wars would get this category, but pages like John Sheppard would not. If someone made a page for some sort of John Sheppard fandom war, then the category would be appropriate. But I don't think characters or pairings or books or tropes or people themselves should be categorized this way. I also think we need some discussion on Fandom Wars fits with Category: Fandom Occurrences. There's a lot of redundancy and inconsistency with the way things are now. --MPH (talk) 15:23, 30 September 2019 (UTC)
I agree with MPH. I found this category through a star wars character page. If we're including all characters and pairings involved in fandom wars, then almost every star wars (sequel trilogy) character and relationship page should probably be here. They've all been dragged into it at one point or another. But they're not, if they were, and we consistently applied the same criteria across other fandoms, then this category would get out of hand very quickly. I also feel that there could be a negative connotation implied by including some ships in this category but not others. An implication that they are more controversial or problematic (which might seem to be the case, but its not our place as editors to make that judgement)
I propose that this category should be organized like Category:Shipwars, with only one page specific to the events included.
Thanks for pointing out the issue with Category: Fandom Occurrences MPH. I didn't notice the duplication until now. I created one of the shipwar pages using the event template others had used, and it automatically includes the page in fandom occurences, as well as Category:Shipwars. Discussion is definitely needed. --Auntags (talk) 01:13, 27 December 2019 (UTC)
I agree with everything that has been side so far, the category should only be used for pages specifically about fandom conflicts and not on pairings/character pages, if those pages have an extensive section on a fandom war than maybe a separate page should be created and some of the information should be moved over. As for whether or not it should be in the Category: Fandom Occurrences category or not I'm willing to go with whatever the consensus is. I created quite a few of the Shipwar pages, and I remember when I first started I asked a couple of editors which template to use and nobody was quite sure, but I think we agreed that the event infobox was the best alternative we had at the time -- Kingstoken (talk) 02:32, 27 December 2019 (UTC)
Hmmm, there doesn't seem to be a template that currently suits Shipwars. Template:Activity doesn't autoadd to any category. But looking again there's a lot of Fandom Wars pages duplicated in Fandom Occurances, so this might be part of a wider discussion. I feel like we have enough consensus to remove tags on character and pairing pages etc. but I'll leave this discussion up for a good while before doing that. If anyone disagrees or has another opinion, leave a comment --Auntags (talk) 14:02, 30 December 2019 (UTC)
I'm going to remove all 95 of these Fandom Wars categories, and delete the category. Every page can either be covered by Category:Fandom Occurrences or it is a single person/character/essay/fandom. --MPH (talk) 20:18, 13 January 2020 (UTC)
MPH, is there a reason this category wasn't deleted? If there is a consensus that Fandom Wars should be deleted, I'm happy to make a start on this. Another page was added to this category this month, and it is also duplicated in Fandom Occurances. If we're deleting this category, I'd also propose changing the templates on pages in the ship wars category, and make it a subcategory of fandom occurances. --Auntags (talk) 12:08, 23 April 2020 (UTC)
I also went ahead and removed this category from pairing, character and people pages, as agreed.--Auntags (talk) 12:34, 23 April 2020 (UTC)
Thank you, Auntags! --MPH (talk) 12:45, 23 April 2020 (UTC)
