Dirk Gently is the primary protagonist of the Dirk Gently franchise. He is a causal psychic and holistic detective.
Canon
Dirk Gently, born Svlad Cjelli, is a holistic, or a person who has a special connection with the universe. Due to his status as a holistic, Dirk was taken by the CIA under Project Blackwing as a child, where he met Osmund Priest and Scott Riggins, and became friends with fellow holistic Mona Wilder, also known as Project Lamia.
While in the custody of Blackwing, Dirk was given the name Project Icarus and experimented on. The organization believed they could use Dirk's status as a holistic to make him perform psychic acts, not understanding how his hunches worked and keeping him in a cell with limited access to the outside world.
Dirk escaped Blackwing's custody and eventually found himself in Seattle, where he met Todd Brotzman. Dirk and Todd eventually formed Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency with Farah Black as their third member.
Fandom
Dirk is popularly interpreted as autistic[1][2] or neurodivergent, which appears in fanworks as well as art and meta.
Due to his birth name being Svlad Cjelli, some also headcanon that Dirk is Romanian[3].
Also, because of his Project Blackwing callsign being Project Icarus, fanart (Icarus Dirk art by soni-dragon on tumblr and Project Icarus art by doromoon on tumblr), fanvids and fanfiction depicting Dirk as Icarus or using Icarus metaphors/imagery is popular. The song Icarus by Bastille is also commonly used as the audio of fanvids or its lyrics as titles for fics.
