eXtreme Possibilities was an X-Files romance fanfiction mailing list.

In December 1996, the moderator posted that traffic was so high, they had to have some changes regarding access:

I've been swamped with people joining. I'm afraid my address book may explode... I hope this isn't too bitchy, and it's only temporary, but from this point on, new members will be required to submit a story in order to join. That doesn't mean there will be a quota or anything - just one story, up front, as an "ante", you know? It was the best way I could think of to limit requests for membership but not eliminate them... Anyway, this may change if I change ISPs or if the list opens up, but for now, that's the plan. [1]

FAQ and Frequently Asked Questions

I. WHAT IS eXtreme Possibilities? eXtreme Possibilities (EP) is an email list for people who want to read and write fan fiction about "The X-Files" that specifically involves a romantic take on Agents Mulder and Scully's relationship. This can range from the understated Unresolved Sexual Tension (UST) that already exists on the show on one end to a full romantic relationship or even marriage between the characters on the other.

EP was founded Feb. 1, 1996 by MaryKate Robinson. She moderated the list until August of 1996 when it was turned over to me.

EP is changing a little from its original state. We have included discussions on the new episodes of the show and news tidbits. However, because EP is primarily a fan-fic list, the discussion and news posts are moderated by me, are clearly labelled, and are only about one or two emails a week.

II. HOW OFTEN ARE STORIES SENT OUT? Stories are sent out according to number of submissions received. I will try to spread it out so that you receive about one to four emails per day. The discussion and news posts are only about once or twice a week. Don't be alarmed if a day goes by without email from EP -- sometimes we don't have anything, but the dry spells are rarely over two days in a row.

III. HOW DO I SUBMIT STORIES TO THE LIST? Stories should be sent directly to the moderator (me) at [address redacted] who will then send them out on a schedule to all the members on the list.

Submissions are our life! We love them! But there are some rules:

A. Write SUB> in the subject of your email when you send it to me so that I know it's a submission and not a story someone has sent me from another list.

B. Format: Please try to send your stories in ASCII format. Do not use SmartQuotes or accents - they don't come through very well. If you need help, drop me a line and let me know what computer you're using, the word processing program and the email program; or send me a test and we'll see how it comes through.

C. Include relevant information. Several things should be included at the top of your submission: 1. NAME (real or screen name, doesn't matter) 2. EMAIL ADDRESS FOR FEEDBACK 3. DISCLAIMER (see generic one below) 4. CATEGORY (listed below) 5. # OF PARTS (if it's still in progress, let us know) 6. TIMESPAN/SPOILERS (what season or episode is your story set in? We have members in Australia and England and we should warn them if your story includes episodes they haven't seen yet.) 7. SHORT INTRO/SUMMARY (let us know what to expect: long? short? angst? comedy?) 8. RATING (optional, unless NC17) 9. REPOST? (Has this story been posted anywhere else? If so, just let me know which lists.)

Generic Disclaimer: "The X-Files and the characters of Mulder and Scully belong to Chris Carter, Ten Thirteen Productions and Fox Broadcasting and are used without permission. No copyright infringement is intended." (This is a legal thing that probably wouldn't hold up in court, but better to have it than not.)

Categories are as follows:

MSR -- Mulder/Scully Romance
MSF -- Mulder/Scully Friendship
NC17 -- explicit sex, adult language, violence
MSA -- Mulder/Scully Angst or tragedies (can include romance)
M/O -- Mulder/Other romance
S/O -- Scully/Other romance
F -- Family
MS? -- doesn't fit a category -- please provide a short description if you can.
DIS -- Reviews of or disscusion on "The X-Files" episodes
NWS -- News tibits about the show in general (e.g. ratings, the actors' activities, etc.)

There is some controversy over M/O and S/O stories - half of the members polled wanted them, half didn't, so keep this in mind when you post them. You won't get flamed, but you may not get as much feedback as you'd like. Some members said "it's okay as long as the other person gets jealous," thus making it an indirect MSR.

Crossposts/Reposts: Any stories that have been submitted to EP before or have run on other mailing lists or a.t.x.c. will be labelled accordingly. I will list the other places that the story has appeared so that you know if you've received it before.

IV. WHAT SPECIAL SERVICES DOES EP OFFER? We have an editing service available for authors who would like their stories proofread. Let me know when you submit your story that you would like to have it edited. I will forward it to one of the editors and they will contact the you directly with feedback. Then, you resubmit the story to me in its final form and I'll post it to the whole group. STORIES WILL ONLY BE EDITED BY REQUEST. If you don't mention editing, then the story will go out as is.

V. HOW DO I SUBSCRIBE OR UNSUBSCRIBE? WHAT IF MY ADDRESS CHANGES? Any questions or comments about the list can be directed to me at [address redacted] This includes submissions, subscribing and unsubscribing to the list, email address changes, editing, and other requests.

VI. DO I *HAVE* TO SUBMIT STORIES? Yes and No. I am currently requiring that new members send in one story in order to sign up. After that, you can submit as little or as much as you like. However, I encourage everyone to give writing a try ---- we've had a lot of first time authors start out on EP, all with great efforts. You may be better at it than you think! [2]
