Reactions and Reviews: Issue 47

Great, but the collator forgot on page 43/44 so that you can't finish one story, nor fully start the following one. That apart, it is interesting, well-written, and varied with poetry and good illustrations. I have found so far all these stories from ScoTpress worth the effort that they put in and a joy to read.[1]

Reactions and Reviews: Issue 50

Big Bumper 50th issue this one. To celebrate this, Sheila has given her best in layout and story selection. Love that Royal Lion. Best two stories - "A Matter Of Survival" and 'Unwillingly To School". For humour: 'IDIC' and "All That Glistens". One A/U from The Empire "Every Form Of Refuge Has Its Price' plus many more from this fine set of writers: Sheila Clark, Meg Wright, and Vicki Richards are to be congratulated on making their 50th issue. Recommended.[2]

E.L.E. 50 is a special triple length edition of the gen, zine put out regularly by ScoTpress. It is, as far as is known, the only Trek zine ever to reach half a century. It follows the usual format of other E.L.E. with short stories, poems and illos. However, the editors have gone to a lot of trouble to make this edition something different. Apart from the contributions from outstanding writers and artists within Trek, the whole zine is delightfully decorated throughout.

The artwork is excellent. Think of anyone who is anyone among Trek artists and they're probably here in this zine. Four illos by Ann Humphrey, Lee Sullivan and two by [Gayle F], are the basis for either stories or poems.

The stories are without exception above average in their style and composition and together with the poetry are a collection from the best writers in British Trek with one or two additions from the States.

There are two humorous stories: 'I.D.I.C;' where our heroes get lost in a
maze, and 'All that Glitters', where Kirk organizes a singing competition. 'A Chip in Time Saves an Officer of the Line' is another in the saga by Lesley Walker about
Lt. Lee Sawyer.

The stories range from two to fifteen pages and many therefore would be ruined by thorough reviewing. However, I feel that a few need a further comment,

'Too-High a Price' by Lee Owers is an interpretation of a [Gayle F] illo. Although only three sides long it is a beautifully expressive piece of writing, which although sad, gives hope for the future. Meg Wright's 'Unwillingly to School' concerns Spock's reaction to his first year at school. An excellent piece of writing, it shows Meg's professional insight into the-ways of the young human or Vulcan.

'You've Got a Friend' by Ann Preece is yet another story of Spock and Kirk on shore leave together at the beginning Of their professional relationship. Despite the fact that the situation has been 'done' before, I found the story most enjoyable as we learn as much about Kirk's loneliness as we do about Spock's.

Crystal Ann Taylor's 'Every Form of Refuge Has Its Price' is a Mirror Mirror
story. It centres around Kirk's thoughts about his relationship with his first
officer, and it takes place while Kirk and the landing party are in the brig on the
Enterprise. Kirk recalls his growing trust of Spock and is furious at what he sees
as Spook's treachery. With Crystal Ann's usual fluid style of writing her fans
should not be disappointed.

E.L.E. 50 is an excellent examples of its type of zine, Sheila, Valerie and Janet are to be congratulated for their dedication and hard work in regularly producing good quality zines at reasonable prices. If number 50 is an example of their 'specials,' then roll on number 100. [3]

Reactions and Reviews: Issue 52

Each of these collections [she includes issue #53] feature well-known stories about shore leave, mysterious beings and unexpected planets. Always entertaining, my favourites from these two issues are 'Memories of Another Day' - where Kirk dreams of being Alexander - and from #53, 'the Practical Joke' - a permission to be ill form? Someone tries to outwit Spock but he enacts his own revenge. I always enjoy ScoTpress, excursions into life on and with The Enterprise, even if they sometimes get a little far-fetched. A good read always. As the editors standards are kept high, their selections for these collections never fail to please. Try them occasionally.[4]

Reactions and Reviews: Issue 53

Each of these collections [she includes issue #52] feature well-known stories about shore leave, mysterious beings and unexpected planets. Try them occasionally.[5]

Once again, a good selection. I don't know how she [does] it. All these stories are excellent. "The Practical Joke" with Jerry Cardew deserving his fate. "Not So Easy" where Peter Kirk is held to ransom, and Kirk pays up, but Spock has a hand in a small retribution. An interesting angle on interstellar crime. "Diplomatic Diversion" is the hard way to Power: be fair or be overtaken. Bzyth wants everything now. He is outwitted neatly by the ambassador and Spock. And many other stories. Always excellent. Recommended.[6]

Reactions and Reviews: Issue 66

100pp, M, offset with card covers. Dear Winky Poo, Congratulations, I always knew you were a champion, your friend, Jessica Tigra. This is the best issue from a seeker of humour. Winky Poo and Paxo Beta rate very good with Reflections a close third. Keep up the good quality. But the Star Trek characters are humans, not gods, and we have forgotten how to treat than as people whilst I feel Friendship and Duty (August, 1985), also by ScoTpress, is a poor addition to their stable. I did not enjoy this story as it was too soft and reverent. It's point is too carefully made, especially as the story line is a good one. Pity more oomph, real grief and anger weren't included.[7]

Reactions and Reviews: Issue 69

"Oh, What a Tangled Web We Weave When First We Practice to Deceive." - caught up in this web are Iain Clifton, Sarek, Spock, Kirk, Amanda et al. - Spock and Kirk seek out 'Philip Johnson' in order to trace Sarek and Amanda lost after a Vulcan ship disappeared between planets. 'Philip Johnson' is a spy - trained to find out the why - and wishing afterwards only to go back to plain LT. IAIN CLIFTON - lowly being.

'Leaving Heme" - an Academy days look back on Spock's reasons for leaving home and his experiences at Starfleet Academy. The A.V. " A Little Less Me, a Little More You', the search for Kirk's Katra - MENTAL AND PHYSICAL ONES - shows how Spock controls things to help others as they have helped him. But "Welcome Home" is the best one for his particular issue - the concept of family is the strongest thread throughout the Star Trek universe. This tale takes Spock and Kirk to celebrate the a'Talet - a festival celebrated around December 25th - Christmas time for Amanda. So she has combined the two festivals, and this time helps Jim grieve for fis mother - recently dead.

SHIELD also features various poems, for myself I find poetry hard to review as it is so personal. However "Loss" Dy Sheryl Peterson and "Mistresses' by Julie Thompson express feeling so well you think you are one with them. There is much more I could say about Scotpress' various zines, I suppose I would become boring. Sheila Clark and Susan Clarke really care about their zine stories: they explore the WEB of space in the 23rd century.[8]

Reactions and Reviews: Issue 72

Dear Edward: You asked me to recommend a short story collection. Well, I think this recent Log Entries will fill your requirements. There is a long one by Brenda Kelsey about Spock and Scott. Yes. Scotty! They are kidnapped and have to endure three days in a freezing cave prison where they (mainly Scotty) find some surprising things out about Spock. One or two others - notably "It Shouldn't Happen to a Doctor" and 'Of Loyalties and Empires' will make you see what I mean about this publisher. Poetry from Julie Thompson is here too. Didn't you say she will go further if given sufficient opportunity? But you know, I wish ScoTpress would be more adventurous. You will understand that better after you finish one or two other collections which I will send on in my next parcel. They can't get away from the first voyages era - we nave gone further than that! Any and all comments about these stories would be appreciated, out do make them brief. I had to pay excess postage on your last letter. -- Marcie.
As you can see from my letter, I found this recent collection from ScoTpress enjoyable. However, the force of the stories is slipping. Of all those presented here only Brenda Kelsey's "In The Still Of The Night" has any real punch. All the others are just ordinary. This is sad as it means contributions are falling into the part of no ideas or old ones over and over again. Maybe Sheila and Valerie need a year s sabbatical to rejuvenate. Also, perhaps a new neiper/editor should be sought, to encourage more authors to come forward. Expansion into more authors to come forward. Expansion into the visions from the films [and] the gap period could also be given though. It is needed as this fine team will lose its well-deserved reputation.[9]

Reactions and Reviews: Issue 80

This zine consists of four short stories, a shorter piece (two pages) of various poems. The first story, 'To Sleep - Perchance to Dream', by Brenda Keisey, has Kirk and Spock on shore leave, trapped in snow in an isolated cabin. It is set just after 'Where No Man...', and offers a most intriguing explanation of the events that took place at the edge of the Barrier. Next is 'Pirate Queen', by Karina Lumbert, in which an old flame catches up with Spock. 'Love-Hate' by Sandy Catchick comes next. An admiral - another old friend of Kirk's - comes aboard to conduct a survey on crew morale, and it turns out that he hates Vulcans... After 'Love-Hate' is the two-pager; 'Times Like These' by Marcia Pecor, in which Kirk goes back with Spock to the old farmhouse in Iowa, just before its new owners take possession. The last story is 'In Search of Homo Vulcanis', by Nicole Comtet. A team of archaeologists is being carried by the Enterprise, and unfortunately for Spock one of them has a theory about Vulcans: the lady in question feels it necessary to inspect him very closely in order to get supporting evidence for the theory!

Usually with compilation zines I find that there is at least one item that I'm not keen on; however, that isn't the case with this one - I loved every bit of it. In all the stories, characterisation is excellent and the plots, in those that have plots, have obviously been well thought out. I liked the mixture between serious and funny stories: 'Pirate Queen' and 'In Search of...' had me in hysterics! The other three are all serious. I think my favourite has to be 'To Sleep - Perchance to Dream', but it's a very close contest! As well as the stories, there are two poems by Sheryl Peterson, who is one of my two favourite posts - the other being Pac Deacon - and another poem, about convention insomnia, by Lynette Muir, which brought back memories of late nights at Frontiers!

The artwork is up to the usual high standard that we always seem to get in zines these days. The cover is a 'recycled' drawing of Doctor McCoy, by Marilena Maiocco; I was glad to see this picture was used again as a cover - it's great. The other two pictures are one of Spock by Ann Humphrey, and one of Kirk by S. Green, both of which are jolly good. All in all then, I would highly recommend this zine.[10]

Reactions and Reviews: Issue 81

This zine caught my eye among many others on the ScoTpress table at Frontiers because of the striking cover of a warrior Spock with a lioness, drawn by Marilena Maiocco. A quick glance down the contents page revealed three long stories, one of them by Sandy Catchick, which is a good enough reason for buying a zine!

E.L.E. 81 is 100 pages long and the print is of the consistently good quality people expect from ScoTpress. The first item is the script of "THE SEVEN AGES OF FAN", portrayed so brilliantly by Lyn Muir and her gang at Rec-Con last year; it's not the same without the costumes and props, but I can remember those and I was laughing so much at the time I missed half the narrative anyway, so it is nice to have a copy! The zine also contains two poems.

Sandy's story "BITTER-SWEET REVENGE" is written from McCoy's point of view. Gary Mitchell's brother is temporarily assigned to the Enterprise and Kirk spends a great deal of time with him, trying, McCoy realises, to make up for what happened to Gary. While the good doctor understands Kirk's motivation he is concerned at the way Spock is being neglected. In his usual direct manner he tackles Kirk on the subject once or twice, pointing out his duty to Spock as his friend, but Kirk insists that Spock understands. It turns out that the Vulcan's thoughts have indeed been running along different lines than McCoy suspected as between them they unearth the real reason why Chris Mitchell is aboard, and the three friends must work together to thwart his plans. All the characters and the complex relationships between them are drawn well, and I particularly liked Sandy's McCoy.

The second story, "DOUBT" by Krysia Baczala deals with Kirk who realises he must be sleepwalking - just odd little incidents at first, but becoming more worrying. Spock is busy working with a team of visiting scientists on a project and is unaware of his Captain's problem. Then one night Spock ia found badly beaten and Kirk awakens to find his own knuckles bruised and bleeding. The Captain confesses his fears to McCoy who keeps him in sickbay under his personal observation. The plot thickens as the doctor ia stabbed and Kirk is found covered in blood, and the same night one of the scientists is murdered.

The last and longest story is "SHORE LEAVE" by Nancy Johnson in which Kirk is injured in a shuttle crash, and is befriended and protected by one of the planet's native, telepathic, dog-like creatures until he is found by Spock. The Vulcan gives in to Kirk's pleas to continue their shore leave together exploring the planet, rather than being returned to sickbay. The story focuses on the close friendship between the two, and the effects of a light mind meld Spock initiates to help heal Kirk's injuries are intensified by the presence of the telepathic dog creature which accompanies them on their travels. They are able to communicate telepathically for much of the story; my only slight quibble was that occasionally I became confused over which of the three the thoughts were emanating from. Kirk and Spock explore the area and come into contact with the planet's two races of Vulcan-like inhabitants and help solve problems between them. This is a strong story - good hurt/comfort with interesting adventure thrown in! I enjoyed this zine a lot and would recommend it to anyone who likes well written, character orientated stories.[11]

Reactions and Reviews: Issue 82

This zine contains three long stories, a shorter piece and various poems. The first story, 'One Way to Hell', by Rosa Caccioppo, concerns the capture of the Enterprise and her entire crew by a race of highly repellent aliens. The next story is 'The Ducking', written by Joyce Devlin using the viewpoint of Doctor McCoy. A landing party discovers more obelisks like the one seen in 'The Paradise Syndrome', which seem to react to Kirk's voice in the same way that one did. The third long story is "A Friend from the Past', by Ann James ('With a little help from her mum' says the credit). Spock is severely injured, and after treatment enters a healing trance. The nurse keeping an eye on him turns out to be an old friend...

This is another great zine in which [ could find nothing to dislike. All the stories are well-written with very good characterisation and well-planned plots. There is a good mix between the stories; 'One Way to Hell' is a serious one. with some very nasty aliens - as far is I'm concerned, they leave the Sackers ('The Three-Minute universe') cold! It also has a fair bit of Spock-McCoy in it, which I always enjoy. 'The Ducking' is a funny one. I usually like Joyce's stories, and this one is no exception. She always has Doctor McCoy just right to my mind; he invariably reacts as I'd expect. 'A Friend from the Past' is a Spock-and-female one, as you might guess from my brief summary, and it's actually an excellent story. Often in this kind of story, Spock gets very out of character, but in 'A Friend' he behaved as I expected. I actually guessed what the trick of the story was, but that didn't affect my enjoyment at all. The end of the 'trick' bit ' (I don't want to spoil it for anyone, so that's all that I'll say!) is really clever. Ann James is new to ScoTpress: I hope that she keeps writing for them.

Apart from the three stories, there is a short piece concerning events just prior to 'The Enterprise Incident' which is most intriguing, and then there are two superb poems each from Pac Deacon and Sheryl Peterson. The cover is a beautiful picture of Uhura by Corinne Meyer - I hope that it's used for at least one more cover - and there's one more picture inside; a great drawing of Spock and Sulu by Anja Gruber.

This zine is definitely a 10/10, and I hope that E-Log 83 is as good.[12]

Reactions and Reviews: Issue 87

"Amok Time Plus One" has Spock deeply troubled by his behaviour towards Kirk during and after Pon Fair, and he decides he must leave- the Enterprise -to prevent such emotional excesses from re-occurring. This is an enjoyable re-affirmation of their friendship - and even more so is "The Guardian'* by Sheryl Peterson. This little cameo of The Relationship is only 3 pages long, but beautifully written, and I love the analogy of Spock as a hawk protecting its master. "Captain's Pets" by Fiona Crawford is an amusing tale of McCoy and Spock getting into trouble on a mission, bickering all the way but being there for each other when it counts. The longest offering is "Absent Friend" by Maggy Edwards. Spock is abducted and tortured by the Klingons in order to blackmail Sarek. A quite enjoyable story, perhaps let down a little by the improbability of Spock's successful escape plan when he is so ill, but that could count as artistic licence! The 6 stories and 4 poems contained in ScoTpress's ELE 87 provide a good variety of action, character and humour.[14]

  • Amok Time Plus One / (Amok Time aftermath)
  • The Secret Life of Plants / (Amanda, snapdragons)
  • Captain's Pets / (Spock, McCoy, lobster aliens)
  • The Absent Friend / (Spock develops blood disease, taken by Klingons) [15]

Reactions and Reviews: Issue 90

LE 90 is in the new A5 format. For those who may be new to fan fiction, editions of Log Entries contain short stories and poems set in the universe of the Original Trek TV series.

Memories by Sandy Catchick is a retrospective. Spock is injured and McCoy remembers another mission, early on in his relationship with the Vulcan, when Spock was similarly injured because no-one would listen to his reservations about a mission. The story is an exploration of die early relationship between Spock and McCoy, told from McCoy's point of view. As with all Sandy Catchick's stories, characterisation is excellent; it is a story for Spock-McCoy fans, and there is a really unpleasant group of planet colonists to dislike, because they are prejudiced against Vulcans.

Maximum Prejudice by Maggy develops the theme of prejudice also. There are two story lines; Spock suffers at the hands of a crewmember with a xenophobic hatred of Vulcans; severe dust and electrical storms have decimated the surface of Vulcan, and Spock does not know if his mother is alive or dead. The story centres on Spock's handling of these situations , and on the battle within him between his Vulcan and Human sides. Maggy conveys a strong sense of Spock's isolation and of the difficulties he has dealing with Humans, allowing the reader to see the world through Spock's eyes.

The above stories are quite long, and have serious themes. Also serious is Katrina Heintz's shorter piece. Goodbyes, which concerns Janice Rand's feelings about leaving the Enterprise.

The mood changes in three short, humorous tales. David Gallagher has Just What the Doctor Ordered and Eye, Eye, Sir included in the zine. The latter story deals with Kirk getting his eyes tested; the former... Well just let me say that McCoy's big line is "I'm a Doctor, not a Chippendale." I say no more except that I couldn't stop laughing... particularly at the ironing joke...

The third story in the humour category is What a Nerve by Gloria Fry, in winch Kirk tries to learn the Vulcan neck pinch and Spock is complimented on his skill as a masseur.

In addition to stories, the zine contains poetry by Christine J Jones, Linda C Wood, Gillian Catchpole, Jenny Turner and Mrs Pippin. Some poems are comic, some serious, all well written. Mrs Pippin's Rescue Plan is another of the Beautiful Alien Lady series; these poems are narrative, and I would like to end the review by quoting from Rescue Plan.

"A mission from Headquarters,,
they've mislaid the Fleet en masse.
Our orders are to seek out every ship..."
Why the Fleet is lost, and what happens, are mysteries that can only be solved by reading the poem.[16]

Tense, nervous headache? Feeling depressed or irritable? ScoTpress brings you an instant cure! Send off an urgent order for this zine, tear it open on arrival and turn to page 76. There you will find a poem which, in its 5 pages, details the entire exploits of NCCI701 and what the other starship crews thought about it all (They needn't feel dejected at the honours Kirk collected, or the fact his crew solved problems so much faster...") It is very cleverly written, rhyming and scanning cheerfully throughout. Whoever you are. Mrs Pippin, thank you - you certainly improved my day!

There are 5 other poems, and over half the zine is taken up with "Maximum Prejudice" by Maggy. This story is about a newly assigned crewman who hates Vulcans and is out to make trouble for Spock. Spock tries to deal alone with the series of attacks on his property and work- Lies and slander spreading amongst some crewmembers undermine his authority. He is further stressed by reports of violent storms causing severe loss of life on his home planet, and fears his mother is dead. Spock is drawn here very well as a dignified, skilled professional who is isolated by prejudice and misunderstanding. McCoy is dealt with rather less sympathetically- There is much interesting and original detail in this story, which comes to a dramatic and unexpected end.

The other story I particularly like is Memories" by Sandy Catchick, a regular and favourite contributor to ScoTpress. Sitting with an injured Spock, McCoy is reminded of a similar incident much earlier in their relationship when he took the Vulcan at face value and didn't know him well enough to identify the signs of pain and stress which nearly killed him. This is a lovely story, illustrating the complex McCoy/Spock relationship almost exactly the way I see it.

This was one of the first publications in A5 format but there are still 100 pages. Personally I had no trouble with the smaller print, and the illos don't seem to have lost any impact. I think I actually prefer this size as not only being cheaper, but much easier to store.[17]

  • Maximum Prejudice / Bigoted engineer has it in for Spock
  • Just What the Doctor Ordered / Scott's physical
  • What a Nerve / Kirk tries to learn the neck pinch
  • Rescue Plan (ballad)
  • Eye Eye, Sir / Kirk has his eyes checked
  • Goodbyes / Rand's recollections
  • Memories / McCoy/Spock on planet where machines are illegal.[18]

Reactions and Reviews: Issue 92

This edition of E-Log Entries is full of goodies - real value for money. The first story, Lost and Found by Alex Blakeney, is excellent - a tense, vivid account of what happens when Kirk is accused of selling secrets to the Romulans to buy his life and freedom. The Kirk we meet at the beginning of the story has been tortured, humiliated and apparently broken by the Romulans who have returned him in disgrace to the Federation. The plot is complex, the story well written and the reactions of the characters realistic. This will join the list of my favourites, and I look forward to reading Alex's next story.

In Ailis by Pen Cramphorn, Spock and McCoy beam down to investigate a planet which appears to be the source of a distress call. They are marooned on the planet when the Enterprise suffers a ship-wide systems failure. McCoy and Spock become ill and McCoy dies... Another well-written story which kept me guessing.

I have learned to look forwards to Alan Boag's work. His short piece The Tales of Montgomery Scott No 1: Scott's Law will I hope lead to Tale 2! Alan has also contributed some amusing limericks, which add to the variety of poetry in the zine.

Sheila Clark's There Will Be Dancing... is very funny, concerning an inspection, the traditional way of wearing the kilt, and Highland dancing... Doesn't that get your imagination working?? In The Chloros Crisis the Enterprise is called to tackle a mystery virus on Chloros IV. At this point it might be worth referring to Sheila Clark's comment in N/L 39, P84, re basic plots. Fiona Fletcher's story is an excellent example of a basic plot being given a fresh treatment. I loved this story; the quality of Fiona's writing, the skill with which she weaves her story lines together, hold the attention of the reader; but what made it special for me was the sheer delight of her characterisation - the repartee between the principals is just right.[20]

  • Lost and Found / Kirk is charged with treason
  • Ailis / McCoy & Spock stranded on a hostile planet; lonely alien wants to keep Spock.
  • There Will Be Dancing / Too-cute piece on what is worn under the kilt
  • The Cloros Crisis / While Kirk finds evil Romulan influence in a plague situation, McCoy needs an operation, with no one but Spock to perform it.
  • Poetry:
    • Third Wheel
    • Epilogue / "Hiawatha" with M&S arguing to divert K after Edith [21]
