Erik Selvig is a character from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he's appeared in Thor and The Avengers films.

Canon

Erik is an old colleague of Jane Foster's father, and was there working with her and Darcy Lewis to carry out her wormhole research, resulting in him being present when Thor arrives on Earth after his banishment. He helps Thor get away from S.H.I.E.L.D.

Working for S.H.I.E.L.D. investigating the Tesseract, Selvig comes under Loki's control when Loki emerges from a portal. Even while under Loki's control, Selvig is able to include a means of shutting the portal equipment down using Loki's staff, allowing him to inform Black Widow just how to shut down the portal during the final battle.

Erik appears to have gone slightly insane due to Loki's mind control; he is seen on the news running round Stonehenge naked with his equipment, but he ending up in a mental institution near Stonehenge. He's bailed by Darcy and her intern, Ian. Erik later joins Jane and Darcy in their apartment by the end.

He is briefly consulted by Thor in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Fandom

Erik is generally a minor background character in fanworks. He's often grouped in with the other Science Bros (Bruce Banner and Tony Stark) and Jane Foster.

Erik is usually shipped with Loki. Other pairings are rare: Erik/Thor, Erik/Darcy, and Erik/Bruce. Gen works of Erik & Jane and Erik & Darcy are more common.

Common Tropes & Fanon

  • Erik moves into the Avengers Tower with Jane, Darcy, and Thor
  • Post-Thor: Dark World, due to him running around Stonehenge naked and his mental instability, he's often portrayed going stark naked around the labs in Avengers.
    • He is often taken care of by Darcy, especially in the labs.
