House of the Dragon is a television series produced for HBO. It is a prequel to the television series Game of Thrones (2011–2019) and is based on Martin's 2018 novel Fire & Blood. Set two hundred years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series chronicles the beginning of the end of House Targaryen, the events leading up to the Targaryen civil war, known as the "Dance of the Dragons", and the war itself.

Fandom

More book-like

In the leadup to the show's release, one idea that multiple fans expressed in that it seemed like it would be more like the book canon than Game of Thrones was.

this is exactly the kind of ridiculous shit we should've gotten in the original show... jaime's lion helm...renly and robert with their antlers...thank you hotd for finally bringing us grrm's vision of insane helmets

Controversies

Wariness about Game of Thrones

After being burned by the ending of Game of Thrones, many people were very aspersive about the idea of any related show, period.

Black Velaryons

Laena Vhagar meme

Corlys Velaryon, who is white in the books, has undergone Chromatic Recasting as a black man played by Steve Toussaint.[2] His children, Laenor and Laena, are in turn biracial.

This has been criticized by some, and praised by others.

David Lightbringer lays out a scenario where Corlys may have a Summer Islander mother and explains how this would make sense:

Of course "black" and "white" are terms that aren't used in A Song of Ice and Fire, but — for all intents and purposes — black people in A Song of Ice and Fire are from the Summer Islands, which are very loosely modeled on African and Caribbean culture, with a little bit of the maritime skill of the Pacific Islanders. [...] The Summer Islanders are the world's foremost mariners [...] They are a largely peaceful people who thrive on trade and as such can be found in every port city around the world. [...] The Velaryons are in turn Westeros's most skilled mariners, who have also grown wealthy off of international trade. Driftmark, stronghold of House Velaryons, has in turn become a thriving port city and a hub of international trade. Frequent contact between Summer Islanders and Velaryons is therefore not only logical, but extremely likely, or even inevitable. And we all know that when humans have contact, they will sometimes fall in love and start a family. [...] Corlys would then be the beneficiary of not one but two sets of advanced seafaring knowledge, setting him up to become the boldest and most accomplished mariner in the history of Westeros — which is exactly what he was. Perhaps Corlys's many long and successful voyages east were aided by his having been able to call upon contacts made by Summer Islanders around the world. I mean, it's easier to think you can sail to Yi Ti and make a fortune if your uncle [...] has already been there and tells you, "Yeah, just look up so-and-so on the west docks and tell them I sent you."

Team Black / Team Green

The division between the Black and Green factions in the show often extends to the real-world fandom. Conflicts between these fan groups are common. The main differentiation is that Team Black thinks their characters have the moral high ground, while Team Green thinks their characters are more interesting.

[jackedup180[3]]
i think at the most fundamental level the team black team green schism in the fandom is based on a misunderstanding of why people like team green. a lot of vocal team blacks treat the show like they’re electing the next president + support rhaenyra because she’s the rightful heir so there’s an assumption that team green are all either misogynists or deluded and feel the exact same way about aegon ii that’s why they like the greens but that just isn’t the case. team blackposting reads like campaign rallies (the TRUE queen… her LEGITIMATE heirs… her KING CONSORT) team greenposting is like do you think criston would give larys a footjob if alicent told him to
[aethelreds[4]]
it’s just that everyone on team green is very dysfunctional in a highly entertaining bluth-roy sort of way, whereas rhaenyra married her cop uncle who got kicked off the force and now she’s a boy mom. i’m not saying i’m taking sides but i am saying that one of these things is more enjoyable to watch and post about than the other.
[visenyaism[5]]
ultimately the team black argument is so boring to me especially in the show because it is just straightforward and correct. like obviously usurping someone for being a woman is bad. but if we weigh the girlboss against watching the six most miserable people i have ever seen in my entire life plus also one anime villain dig themselves into a hole so twisted and deep that they can’t see the sun from the bottom until the house collapses foundationless into the dirt it’s just NO contest. rhaenyra being correct is like a tertiary concern that’s not why i’m here.

One tumblr survey provides data supporting this theory:

Less common, but not uncommon, is the view that Team Green is more sympathetic than Team Black.

[ripley-stark[7]]
how am i supposed to think that the daddy's girl who married her cop uncle is more of an underdog and misogyny sufferer than the miserable child bride with the crazed lancelot-coded bodyguard and the disabled son who never saw justice. like am i actually unironically expected to do that
