Reactions and Reviews

Classic tales mainly focused on C and her investigations. In the lively “All that Heaven Allows,” Catherine's skiing trip is complicated by an attractive game warden, two greedy poachers, an avalanche, an injured ankle, a black bear... and a romantic (if chilly) sojourn in a cave with V. In “Partisan and Apostate,” a screenplay, C investigates the mysterious death of a onetime friend, Barbara, and learns about the dangerous world of “look-alike” drugs; V gets sick while tending children during an outbreak of flu, Below. “When the Smoke Clears” tells of C working with a crippled, irascible man on an arson case. In the rather diffuse “Chameleon's Dance,” a number of people-C, her father, Jamie, Kipper-contemplate changing their lives, with mixed results. In “Painted Love,” tunnel dweller Hallie secretly displays one of V's paintings Above, and V/C exchange a first kiss. In “The Best Anniversary Ever,” V/C begin a sensual discovery of one another. In “What the Heart Seeks,” we get a recollection, from the far future, of “Vincent and Grandmother Catherine,” in a SND narrative reuniting C, V, and Jacob. Also art and some poetry by Brinkley and one portrait of Jamie by Lynette Combs.[1]
