Lucifer is a 2016 Fox television series based upon the Vertigo/DC Comics character Lucifer Morningstar, who in turn is based off Lucifer (aka "Satan"/the "Devil").

Canon

Lucifer Morningstar decides to take a vacation from being the Lord of Hell and escapes to Los Angeles, where he gets his kicks helping the LAPD punish criminals.

Other main characters include:

  • Chloe Decker, an LAPD homicide detective who solves crimes with Lucifer after he takes an interest in her because she appears immune to his abilities. It becomes apparent that Lucifer can be injured and even killed when she is in the near vicinity for reasons that are unclear but possibly related to her status as a literal God-given miracle.
  • Dan Espinoza, An LAPD homicide detective and Chloe's ex-husband. He and Lucifer become frenemies, and often helps Maze out. Loves pudding.
  • Amenadiel, A dark-winged angel who arrives in Los Angeles to encourage Lucifer to go back to Hell. In the second season, he loses most of his angelic abilities including his wings much to his chagrin.
  • Mazikeen, aka "Maze", a devoted ally of Lucifer Morningstar. She is the war leader of the Lilim, a race descended from Lilith, and acts as a bartender at Lucifer's club who later becomes a Bounty Hunter in Season 2. She also becomes the roommate of Chloe and her daughter Trixie, who she befriends as well.
  • Beatrice Espinoza, nicknamed "Trixie", Chloe's daughter who befriends Lucifer, much to his amazement (and disgust, since he despises children). She also befriends Mazikeen.
  • Dr. Linda Martin, Lucifer's therapist and Mazikeen's human best friend.
  • Ella Lopez, the LAPD forensic scientist that joined the series in Season 2 and becomes fairly close with Chloe, Dan and Lucifer. She has a very positive personality and is protective of her friends.
  • "Charlotte Richards"/"Mom" aka Goddess, is Lucifer and Amenadiel's mother who helped God create the universe. She mainly appears in Season 2.
  • Marcus Pierce, is the new LAPD Lieutenant in Season 3.

Fandom

The Lucifer fandom mainly appears on Tumblr, YouTube, FanFiction.net, and Archive Of Our Own. Fanworks such as fanfiction, vids, and gifsets immediately started appearing after the premiere was aired. Many fans enjoy the show, while some were initially afraid that it would be just another buddy cop series. There was some fear expressed on Tumblr that the series would turn Lucifer completely human and turn into just another crime/police procedural show.

Controversy

Those that oppose the show completely usually believes the series will glorify Lucifer[1] - protests and petitions were created to stop the show from airing.[2]

Neil Gaiman responded on his Tumblr page: "Ah. It seems like only yesterday (but it was 1991) that the “Concerned Mothers of America” announced that they were boycotting SANDMAN because it contained Lesbian, Gay, Bi and Trans characters. It was Wanda that upset them most: the idea of a Trans Woman in a comic book… They told us they were organising a boycott of SANDMAN, which they would only stop if we wrote to the American Family Association and promised to reform. ...I wonder if they noticed it didn’t work last time, either…"[3]

The petitions didn't work, and the show premiered with 7.16 rating in January 2016.

Shipping

Since the premiere of the pilot episode, the pairing of Lucifer/Chloe has appeared, and become the most popular ship in this fandom. The gen pairing of these characters also appears, as well as gen fics focusing on the relationship between Lucifer and Chloe's daughter, Trixie. After the first four episodes aired, Lucifer Morningstar/Mazikeen and Amendiel/Mazikeen also started to appear. Mazikeen/Linda Martin appeared soon after they canonically met. The rarer pairings of Chloe Decker/Mazikeen and Dan Espinoza/Lucifer Morningstar also appeared in Season 1. Other pairings appeared in later seasons, such as Lucifer Morningstar/Marcus Pierce and Eve/Mazikeen.

Interestingly het and slash pairings are somewhat rare in the Lucifer fandom, possibly due to the popularity of Lucifer/Chloe.

Fanfiction Tropes

  • Good cop, Bad cop: Chloe Decker is seen to be a rule abiding cop whereas Lucifer goes off of the books to get the answers in whatever means possible.
  • Charlatan: Lucifer is always saying that he is the Devil but nobody believes him.
  • Anti-villain: Even though Lucifer is the devil, he is very honorable and does a lot for the greater good of humanity.
  • Will they or won’t they: The whole series is a build up to whether or not Chloe and Lucifer will get together.

Fanfiction

  • Scars by fearthespork, Teen, Chloe/Lucifer, Lucifer is injured protecting Chloe and while she patches him up, his scars once again become the hot topic.
  • Post-Midnight Guests by BurningUpASunJustToSayHello, Chloe/Lucifer, Lucifer isn't exactly sure how he got to the Detective's house but, he does know that his back is killing him.
  • Devil’s Advocate by Praemonitor, WIP, Non-chronological though interconnected ‘minisodes’ — inspired by Devil-themed words of wisdom — to catalogue the misadventures of Lucifer and Chloe, squeezed in-between their respective and occasionally overlapping day jobs. Whether his next hurdle be preternatural or not, the Devil’s finally found his advocate.
  • Carnival Night by lostsassafrass, Chloe/Lucifer & Trixie Decker, Chloe had tried everything to cheer Trixie up in the last few days. Ice cream, chocolate cake, a trip to the zoo, even letting Lucifer come over and cook her breakfast this morning… but nothing was really working.
