Miguel O'Hara is Spider-Man in the cyberpunk future of the year 2099.

Canon background

2099

In the cyberpunk future of 2099, Miguel O'Hara finds himself in the cross-hairs of his cutthroat corporate employers. He dons an old Day of the Dead costume and begins fighting as the Spider-Man of his time. He has Mexican heritage through his maternal side. He's good friends with Doom 2099. It was 90s-tastic, guys.

Other than his relatively short solo series, he tends to pop up in time travel/multiverse crossover storylines in Earth-616 with his pal Peter Parker.

Spider-Verse

Spoiler Warning: This article or section may contain spoilers. If this bothers you, proceed with caution.

Miguel O'Hara makes an appearance in the post-credits scene of the 2018 film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. He is a major character in the 2023 sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. In it, he is the leader of a cross-dimensional society of spider-people, setting the plot in motion before taking on an antagonistic role in relation to Miles. This is due to his belief in the theory (which hasn’t been contradicted by canon so far) that Miles’ father needs to die as a canon event. Stopping such event would lead to the destruction of Miles’ Universe and also possibly stop Miles from learning an important lesson other spider-people have learned (in the same vein as “With great power comes great responsibility “) which seems integral to their role as heroes.

Reception and meta

After the release of Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse, Miguel has become a major husbando. There has been a boom of fanwork since the release of ATSV, with most written works being Miguel O'Hara/Reader, followed by Miguel O'Hara/Peter B. Parker and Miles Morales/Miguel O'Hara .

Fanon and tropes

Miguel has exploded in popularity with the fans, being part of the biggest pairing of the Spiderverse movie on AO3 (Miguel O’Hara/Reader). The second most popular pairing is with Peter B. Parker (Spiderdads) and the third one is with Miles Morales (FlowerFang). It is believed that the FlowerFang pairing would be much bigger if Miles wasn’t a teen, since many of the scenes popular with fans are the ones where both Miguel and Miles interact, especially in the Miguel O’Hara/Reader pairing.

  • Transgender Character: One very popular trope is the Trans!Miguel trope. This trope even has some unique characteristics, such as Miguel’s top surgery scars being made out of the same glowing orange material as his webs. His spider DNA affecting his condition is also used as a theme occasionally.

Relationships

By order of popularity, these are the major pairings featuring Miguel O’Hara.

  • Miguel O’Hara/Reader
  • Peter B. Parker/Miguel O’Hara Also known as Spiderdads or Papas Araña
  • Miles Morales/Miguel O’Hara Also known as FlowerFang or FlowerBite

  • Gato by Anonymous The longest FlowerFang multichapter fic, featuring Trans!Miguel as well as bottom Miguel. Miguel can't stop thinking about that moment Miles held him down. Miguel's never felt such strength, and can't stop fantasising about Miles holding him down like that again. Sure makes becoming friends with Miles a lot more awkward. (2023)
  • Mechanical Engineering by CallMeW FlowerFang Fic featuring Miguel’s unique Spiderman abilities Or Miles gets hurt a lot, and Miguel’s venom can numb the pain. (2023)
  • Muscle Memory by galaxypizza Spiderdads Fic AU. Miguel leads a perfectly normal, arguably lonely life as a university professor in New York. Then Peter and his annoyingly adorable baby move in next-door. (2023)
