Monster Kid is a character from Undertale. They also have a minor appearance in Deltarune. They were originally designed by Magnolia Porter, creator of the webcomic Monster Pulse, who also designed a few other minor characters in the game.

Canon Overview

In Undertale

Monster Kid is a recurring NPC, appearing to be some kind of lizard or dinosaur with no arms. They first appear in Snowdin Town, and then reappear during the Waterfall story segment, having snuck out to watch their idol Undyne beat up bad guys. Several times they appear and inadvertently prevent Undyne from attacking Frisk, and they also help Frisk around various obstacles, until Undyne tells them that Frisk is the human she is hunting.

In the Neutral and Pacifist routes, they confront Frisk and try to become enemies with them; when this does not work they attempt to return home only to slip and fall off a bridge when Undyne approaches; the player can either help them up, run away from Undyne, or stand and let them fall. If the player helps them up, they become disillusioned with Undyne towards the end of the game and start idolizing Papyrus instead.

In the Genocide/No Mercy route, they confront the player, which starts a battle. If the player spares them, this aborts the route and reverts it to a Neutral run; if the player attacks, Undyne appears and takes the blow in their place, allowing Monster Kid to escape.

Monster Kid's name is never revealed in-game. They say that they can tell Frisk is a kid like them because Frisk is wearing a striped shirt, as all child characters in the game wear stripes; this is probably a reference to the Mother/EarthBound series, where all the protagonists wear striped shirts. They can be found in Snowdin Town at the very end of the game, and during the credits are depicted going to Toriel's school.

In Deltarune

This world's version of Monster Kid is a high school student, and a classmate of Kris'. They are partnered with Snowy (who in this universe is in the same older-teen age group as Kris) for the class' group project, though they say they would have partnered with Kris if Kris had gotten to class on time. Like most members of the class, they dislike Susie for being weird and scary, and if approached during the Hometown walkaround in chapter 1 can be found badmouthing her.

Deltarune's Monster Kid no longer wears stripes. They're also depicted as wearing a crucifix pendant, to suit the conservative Christian atmosphere of Hometown.

Fandom

Because of their lack of a canon name, Monster Kid is commonly referred to as MK in fan works. They mention having an older sister, whom some fans speculate may be Alphys because she is also reptilian and yellow.

They are also commonly compared to the Pokemon called Scraggy, which is a bipedal yellow lizard with a round head which often has its hands occupied by holding up its pants.

Fan Theories

Some fans speculate that the way that Monster Kid decides that Undyne is actually just a jerk and starts idolizing Papyrus instead under certain circumstances in the best ending is meant to be a narrative parallel to the way Asriel Dreemurr stops idealizing Chara but starts idealizing Frisk in their place.

It has also been noted by fans that in Deltarune, the ridges on Monster Kid's head have switched sides from left (player's view) to right in their front-facing sprite. As at least one of the other Gaster Followers appears in Hometown in color, it is theorized that Deltarune's Monster Kid may actually be this universe's version of Goner Kid (the grayed-out monster child who can be found in Waterfall in a FUN event), whose head spikes were also on the right side. Goner Kid's checkered smock also has a plus-shaped pattern across their chest like Deltarune Monster Kid's crucifix necklace. If this is true, this could mean that Undertale's Monster Kid may be a Goner in Deltarune.[1]

Common Pairings

  • Frisk/Monster Kid (Friskid)
  • Monster Kid/Snowy

Wank

As with other characters in the game who use they/them pronouns (Frisk, Chara, and Napstablook), there has been wank about Monster Kid's gender, with many fans interpreting them as nonbinary and other fans believing that their gender is free for players to decide.

The original release of the Undertale artbook referred to Monster Kid with he/him pronouns. This was corrected in the PDF version of the artbook.
