The word comes from the Anglo-Saxon word for meeting
JRR Tolkien used the term in The Lord of the Rings (The Two Towers), when the Ent Treebeard, hearing news of Saruman from the Hobbits Merry and Pippin, calls a gathering of all the Ents.
