The Punisher is a comic book series published by Marvel Comics featuring the fictional antihero, Frank Castle.

Canon

The Punisher made his first appearance as an adversary of Spider-Man in The Amazing Spider-Man #129 (Feb. 1974). The character's first solo story was published in Marvel Preview #2 (1975). He received his first miniseries in 1986 and first ongoing series, The Punisher, in 1987.

The Punisher's brutal nature and willingness to kill made him a novel character in mainstream American comic books in 1974. By the late 1980s, he was part of a wave of psychologically troubled antiheroes.

The first live-action adaption of the Punisher was a 1989 direct-to-video film starring Dolph Lundgren. A commercially successful Punisher film was released in 2004, starring Thomas Jane. There were plans for a sequel to the 2004 film, but it became instead a 2009 reboot, Punisher: War Zone, starring Ray Stevenson.

The character was introduced to the MCU in the second season of Daredevil in 2016, portrayed by Jon Bernthal. Bernthal reprised the role in the 2017 spin-off series The Punisher.

The character also made appearances on Spider-Man: The Animated Series and The Super Hero Squad Show.
