Summary

From the publisher: "While installing a new computer system at U.N.C.L.E's NY headquarters, Kuryakin discovers critical defense information is being accessed by unauthorized personnel. Mr. Waverly has mysteriously disappeared and the temporary head of U.N.C.L.E., Paolo Alberti, is openly hostile to our favorite Russian agent. Illya confides in Emily Arkwright, with whom he's become romantically involved, but it's too late to prevent Alberti from sending him on a dangerous assignment at the Soviet border. Kuryakin is captured by Thrush and traded to the Soviets for a scientist they desperately need. Now it's up to Solo and a few other loyal agents to locate Waverly and try to get Illya out of the Soviet system before he goes insane, or dies trying to escape."

Author's Notes from the Otter Limits Press Edition

One luxury of publishing a story is the opportunity to "give credit where it is due" and to thank the folks who have been even peripherally involved in the final product. Permit me to indulge!

Like all U.N.C.L.E. fans, I have to thank all those great folks who created the show originally. They captured me when I was young, and they've been keeping me young ever since. That includes those two wonderful men, David McCallum and Robert Vaughn, who, by growing, evolving and diversifying over the years have inspired us all to do the same.

Naturally, there are all those crazy friends who help out. Like Joyce, who started writing with me when we were in 8th grade and the show was still on the air. She has forgotten U.N.C.L.E. - and me - but I just can't get it out of my system! And then there is Linda, who actually looked forward to those "plain brown envelopes" in the mail.

She also straightened out my chronological errors, etc.

And more thanks to my pal K.C., who told me to "do it, already!"

On the publishing end, thanks to Charlene Kirby, a classy, trustworthy person who pushed me forward and provided the super illustrations. And also, a big arigata (that's thanks to all you non-Nipponese...) to Paulie and the gang at Otter Limits, for their other inspirational publications (11 and 2, Nowhere Man, plug, plug), and for making this publication possible.

Speaking of inspiration, thanks to every Russian composer of the 19th century, especially my friend and yours. Modest Mussorgsky (this time). And, to the authors of those many fine books on the U.S.S.R. which were helpful.

And oh yes oh yes, thank you, U.N.C.L.E. fans everywhere. Without you, I wouldn't even have a chance to do something like this. Isn't it amazing what we do for each other just by being???!!!

Keep the faith!
